A field day was held on 16 July to boost the use of technology in the sustainable production of vegetables in Haiti. Producers in the Kenscoff Region had an opportunity to acquaint themselves with 50 Brazilian technologies adapted to Haiti’s tropical climate that farmers in other parts of the country have already applied.
In addition to the technologies, farmers learned about alternative soil fertility management practices such as the production of biofertilizers using local inputs and the utilization of green fertilizers.
The activity was carried out with Afé Nég Combit (ANC), an association of black-owned businesses made up of 4000 micro-producers in 80 communities in the Kenscoff Region.
The field day was part of the actions planned by the Brazil-Haiti bilateral project “Promoting Sustainable Vegetable Production in the Kenscoff Region,” Haiti’s biggest vegetable-producing area, which is situated just 20 km outside of Port-au-Prince.
Underway since 2006, the project is managed by the Brazilian center for the technological development of vegetable growing, Embrapa Hortalizas, and financed by the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC).
The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development of Haiti and Brazil’s Embassy in the country are also involved in the project.
